canister stove

March 4th, 2010

There are stoves that run on butane. These are also called canister stoves. A canister stove is useful in backpacking and camping. It is supposed to be all weather equipment but it will usually see a decline in performance in cold weather. During burning the fuel inside the canister evaporates, causing the canister to cool. Moisture in the air will condense or freeze on the outside of the canister further chilling the gas inside the canister.

It will need a bit of experience to be able to increase the efficiency of a canister. The easiest way to do this is to start off with a warm canister. Keep them deep in your pack or jacket or in your sleeping bag so they start off warm. You can also heat the canister by using a chemical hand warmer. A windscreen will be helpful in deflecting the wind from the stove so that there is no possibility of the fire being put out.
