Starting a Fire

November 23rd, 2011
Comments Off

When in a camping trip, it is particularly important to start a fire. This will make us comfortable especially at night. The cold weather can be unbearable when the night falls. Imagine the discomfort we feel when the freezing cold is too much to handle at home where we have a heater. In camp, the fire is important to use in order to substitute the heater we use. This allows us to bear with the cold despite staying in the outdoors.

To help you start a fire, waterproof matches always come in handy for a no-stress and no-frills campfire. Using ordinary matches just won’t hack it. This is especially so when it is raining outside and ordinary matchsticks would not be able to serve its function. This is an essential item to be added on the list of must-haves to bring during camping trips. This way you can start a fire without problems and ensure a comfortable night.

Added Protection

There are many types of modern tents available for camping, each with its own special advantages. Some tents are light and easy to pack, while others are designed to be heavier and more durable. Most modern tents include a tent fly which will provide added protection against the rain. A tent fly usually covers the entire tent and is ideal for use in wet climates. Some modern tents retain heat even in sub-arctic conditions, while others are designed with excellent air flow for hot-weather camping.

One of the most popular tents in use today are called dome tents. These tents are available in a variety of configurations, but the most common type is the one in which two jointed poles are crossed over one another to form a large bent “X”. Dome tents provide exceptional stability in windy conditions and will naturally slough snow off of themselves. They have a generous amount of interior space and headroom and are designed to be very easy to set up.

If you are planning a camping trip real soon, be sure that you have all your needed tools and materials packed already. You wouldn’t want to be unsafe inside the woods right? So I suggest that you research the basic needs of a camper before you go on a trip. This is especially noted for the first timers.

One of the things I think you should buy is a Swiss army flash light. They last longer than the usual flashlights you can buy inside a hardware store and they have lots of different features too. They are also very lightweight and compact with brighter light. So if you want to have a good light on your trip, go and use that one!

Camping is one of the favorite leisurely past times of many people. It allows them to be one with nature and appreciate the great outdoors. Camping trips not only help one discover about the natural beauty that Mother Nature has, but also discover things about himself like endurance and adaptability. Given that being outdoors strips an individual from the comforts of the things he as at home, not everyone is able to fully adapt to a life without electronic gadgets, a well-functioning bathroom, and electricity all day.

Surviving camping trips would be easier should you have the right equipment with you. A sturdy tent with tent accessories would ensure a bit more comfortable sleep outside. Comfortable clothes and lightweight shoes allow you to protect yourself from nature’s elements. Food, water and tools to help you work around the premises is also important for a much more pleasurable trip. Camping can be fun, should you only learn to appreciate the simple things it can offer.

Camp Nights

Camping out in the wild can be pretty much exciting. But long nights out in the woods, without television or any form of entertainment can be pretty darn boring. Story telling of sorts are for kids, and often times I would rather stay at home than endure those cold and pestering hours of doing nothing.

So trips like these we vowed to come up with ways to amuse ourselves. I’d bring along my bicycle playing cards on these trips to provide some form of amusement to kill those long hours. Games usually involved wacky consequences for the loser. These days, camp nights are no longer as excruciating as they used to be.

A hatchet is a tool that is often described as a small ax that can be used with one hand instead of two. This tool is sometimes also known as a camping axe. It features a handle that is often half the length of the standard ax handle. The camping axe is a very handy tool that can be used for smaller jobs, such as cutting through thick shrubs and small branches. It has also been historically used as a weapon.

A hatchet or camping axe was often used in frontier settings as a tool that could be used for a number of chores around the house. It is now often used for splitting sections of kindling into smaller sections for a fire. It is also ideal for cutting through small sections of wood, such as a young tree. The camping axe is considered a common part of camping gear because it is compact, very useful, and provides an element of protection in the wild.

Splitting and Cutting Wood

November 12th, 2010

History tells us that the axe has had some religious significance in earlier times. Axes also indicated an exalted status for the owner. Their value is manifested in their being presented as gifts to the deities. Folklore also has it that stone axes were believed to be thunderbolts and were used to guard buildings against lightning. The reason for this practice is hinged on the belief that lightning never struck the same place twice.

This seems to be far removed from what we know the axe to be today. We know the axe to be an implement that is used to split and cut wood. The axe is a wedge shaped piece of metal on top of a long handle that provides leverage for a powerful swing with the sharp edge of the wedge hitting the piece of wood or log with the grain so the wedge will split the wood along the grain. It is still preferred over mechanical splitters because of their portability. It will easily fit in a car trunk or truck. Splitting wood with the use of an axe is also considered a good exercise.

Cutting Implements – High on the List of Camping Tools

After purchasing big ticket camping gear such as the tent and stove, you will want to look at other camping tools. You will need proper clothing and footwear for camping. I would also bring along the following: a rain tarp, butane lighter, canteen bottles, pliers, duct tape, rope and also one of those little tiny sewing kits. Don’t forget a really good flashlight or perhaps two or more depending on the amount of people in the camping party. Also don’t forget those utensils for cooking and eating.

Cutting implements are high on the list. You will probably need a small axe for cutting wood. Definitely, you will need a few camping knives. A practical size one will be at least 4 to 5 inches long with a thin, flat blade. This will make cutting meats and vegetables a cinch.
