Camping with the Family

November 5th, 2010

The last time I went camping will probably remain my last. Don’t get me wrong, I love camping; it’s been a childhood favorite of mine that I’ve held onto for decades. However, in an attempt to introduce my own kids to camping, it seems to have lost its appeal. They whine and moan about the bugs, the dirt and just about everything related to nature. So, maybe it’s not camping I dislike after all, it’s camping with my kids I should avoid.

On our last family trip, we were all in charge of packing things we needed for the vacation, as usual. We try to put an emphasis on family effort when we can. So we get to the campsite, set up our giant tent and get ready for bed only to discover that my eldest son, Matthew, has forgotten to pack our sleeping bags. We all had to sleep on the floor of the tent for three nights.

If you’re a seasoned hiker, camper or outdoor enthusiast then what I’m about to talk about will be like singing to the choir. When you’re out in the wilderness you know that every benefit counts, and there’s no sense in making sleeping tougher when it may already be challenging enough. Given the variety of climates and environments you can find yourself in, it’s important to make sure you have the right sleeping bag for the trip.

After spending another night in discomfort, I finally decided to invest in a quality sleeping bag. And let me tell you, it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Just a few nights in this thing and I knew I’d found the perfect sleeping bag for all of my outdoor activities. No more freezing cold or uncomfortable nights for me. Well worth the money spent, I’d recommend Chinook to anyone.

Why the Mummy Sleeping Bag is More Efficient

The main styles of sleeping bags are the rectangular bag, the mummy-shaped bag and the tapered bag. Each bag has different insulating qualities brought about by the shape. The kind of filling used makes a lot of difference on the efficiency of sleeping bags. However, the shape of the bag has also a lot to do with keeping the person warm.

The mummy sleeping bag is a tight fit to the user’s body. Some even feature hoods that tighten around the head by pulling a drawstring. This kind of sleeping bag, although confining, is advantageous in extremely cold locations. The less airspace inside the bag makes it more efficient in keeping the user warm. The more available free space, the more there is to heat.

backpack sleeping bag

March 8th, 2010

Though it may be true that luxuries are sacrificed when you go to a hiking trip, there are products that could provide you with your much-needed comfort. For example, a portable heater can keep you warmth amidst the cold weather in the woods. A backpack sleeping bag on the otherhand can give you a comfortable space to lie on after a long day of walking and hiking. This is typically lightweight and commonly made of nylon or variety of light fabrics.

In choosing the best backpack sleeping bag, there are factors that you should consider. The material that you will choose should be good enough to stand the average weather conditions. If you’re not sure about the weather, choose the one that is best for cold weather. Synthetic materials are best because they retain their insulating qualities when you have to use it in wet climate. For extra warmth and insulation, a mummy bag is proven to be better than the square shape.

sleeping bag

Choosing sleeping accommodations should be discussed with the kids. They will be excited to have their very first sleeping bag. What should be considered when choosing a child’s first sleeping bag? First, you need to check the temperature or comfort rating. This will tell you what temperature the sleeping bag is suitable for. Since you are going to a backyard camp, and since you are probably doing this in the summer, a moderate setting will be just fine.

Because you are preparing your child for camping in more uncomfortable locations you might as well ensure the quality of the sleeping bag that you are buying. It should be warm and sturdy but light enough for a child to carry. It should be made of the best material. The warranty that it carries is a test of its durability. Being safe is the most important issue among parents with children going off to camp.

Coleman sleeping bags

January 29th, 2010

All kids love adventure. Often this adventure involves camping in your own backyard. During my 7th birthday my dad got me two Coleman sleeping bags. Actually, one bag for me and one bag for him. That weekend, I insisted we sleep outdoors.

That overnight adventure I’ll never forget. First, since my dad and I were amateurs, it took us forever to put up the tent properly. It fell on us twice before we finally got it. Second, we didn’t put an earth pad. Sleeping in the Coleman sleeping bags without the earth pad was torture. We couldn’t sleep. It was too cold. Lastly, by the next morning both my dad and I were grumpy. Not only did we not get enough sleep we were itching all over because of mosquito bites.

Lightweight sleeping bags

January 5th, 2010

Before heading out to the great outdoors, make sure that you have all the important necessities for a nice camping trip you can enjoy with your friends. There are various sleeping bags made for different purposes and uses. Lightweight sleeping bags are normally cooler than heavy ones. Another aspect of sleeping bags is the filling. Down fills are a lot heavier but they are also warmer.

So for cold places, it is advisable to bring along warmer sleeping bags. But if you are camping during the summer, you may want to go for the synthetic filled sleeping bags which are cooler and lighter in weight. Heavy sleeping bags occupy more space in your packs. If you are bringing a lightweight sleeping bag, you can haul in more stuff in your pack such as extra water and food.

Mattress pads

December 28th, 2009

There is one essential element of the bed that is often overlooked. Mattress pads serve many purposes:

~They protect the mattress
~They keep the sheets on the bed
~They provide additional comfort and softness

A fitted mattress pad covers both the top and sides of the mattress. It looks like a fitted sheet with elastic on all corners but is quilted on the top. Mattress pads are machine washable. They can be washed less often than the bed sheets but more frequently than the comforter.
