Brunton stove

May 28th, 2009

When I was a young girl, I joined the girl scouts league. It was different back then, we didn’t have to sell cookies like some girls do now. We also spent some time in the outdoors. We went on overnight camping trips and learned how to cook our own meals. My 10-yearold niece is a girl scout and yesterday she brought home a Brunton stove to bring to her camping trip this weekend.

So much has changed since I was a little girl. We didn’t have a portable Brunton stove to bring along during camping trips. Back then, we would just put a few twigs together, put some fir and place kettle on top of it. We hardly cooked that much back then, most of our meals were composed of skewered hotdogs and marshmallows placed on top of flames. I hope my niece enjoys herself, she needs to work hard, play hard, and eat well after all.

camping pillow

May 28th, 2009

I woke up with a stiff neck this morning. The last time I had a stiff neck, it took weeks to heal. My friends are inviting me to go camping this weekend and I haven’t the faintest idea of what to pack. I was just planning to bring a sleeping bag but with this new development I might as well start looking for a camping pillow to go with my bag. I went to the nearby outdoor shop and saw a few interesting choices.

A camping pillow is not at all like the conventional pillow. A camping pillow is not made up of soft cotton and other fancy stuff that all these new pillows claim to have. It is inflatable and can be easily compressed as well. I was expecting them to be small in size. I was surprised to see that there were big sizes too. They were also not too hard and not too soft either.

outdoor dinnerware

May 27th, 2009

Summer days mean lots of warm weather, longer days and alfresco dining. Enjoy the pleasant climate by eating outside more often. Set up a picnic table in the garden or open patio. Go to the park or beach once in a while to further whet your appetite. Make sure you bring along outdoor dinnerware for dining outside.

These types of dinnerware are durable and won’t easily break when dropped on a wooden deck or concrete patio. Shop for colorful platters, plates, bowls, and glasses. These will definitely uplift the mood of everyone who will sit on your outdoor table. Prepare meals that don’t easily spoil in the heat and have a cooler near to keep beverages cold.

Grand Coulee Villas

May 27th, 2009

Our plan for this summer includes a visit to the Grand Coulee, a week in Vegas and a weekend in San Diego to visit some friends. This road trip should last about three weeks. We are planning to stay in one of the many Grand Coulee Villas by the lake. I have done some research online and I am surprised to learn that they don’t really cost that much. Most of them have at least two bedrooms which make them a great alternative to hotels.

The Grand Coulee villas I booked all came with a view of the lake. They have two bedrooms, a roof deck, an outdoor porch, a huge kitchen and centralized air conditioning. There is a satellite TV and a telephone phone as well as barbecue grills. The rent is on a weekly basis so it is safe to assume that most vacationers need more than a weekend to enjoy the sights. All I need now are a few pieces of tenderloin steaks, a stack of beer and some books.

Inova flashlights

May 18th, 2009

I first came across my favorite flashlight when my husband was gifted with one. It was cute and small but very heavy. If not for its heaviness it would have been something that I would regularly bring in my bag together with my lipstick and cell phone. I decided to keep it on the bedside table in case I needed it if I woke up and there was a brown out. With its ultra right LED it had a range that far exceeded the walls of my bedroom. It was a beauty with its black anodized body.

I just found out that it was one of the excellent products of Inova flashlights. Its light beams equal or are better than high priced brands. You wonder how such clear white light can come out of such a little piece. I will treasure my little black flashlight and keep it beside me all the time. It will be my loyal companion in the dark.

These tents are pole-less and can be folded into a very small pack size that’s why they are called pocket tents.

Pocket tents get the propping they need by attaching them to a car, walking poles or whatever support is on hand. Although pocket tents have a minimal profile, they still offer ample room for one or two persons. You can use them overnight and some even include an inner tent and generous roof window with privacy curtains if you want to stargaze during the night.

camping solar panel

May 15th, 2009

Some campers will bring generators to be assured of power during a camping trip. But generators are unwieldy to move around and they are noisy. You don’t want to announce your presence to all the animals in the forest. Your best bet is to bring along a camping solar panel.

outdoor stove

May 14th, 2009

Cooking and eating outdoors are two of the best parts in any hiking or camping trip. During the old days, camping gurus used to teach and encourage campers that the most effective way of lighting up a campfire for cooking is to use driftwood and leaves. But after many cases of forest fires over the years, forest rangers now prohibit setting up fires of any kind in camping areas. It’s a good thing there are outdoor stove manufacturers that created cooking devices ideal for camping.

Camping stoves of today have become more versatile in terms of the fuel used. They also have become so ergonomic that they can snugly fit in most packs. Outdoor stoves come in many forms and designs; some are so versatile they can be folded into the size of a coffee cup! There are also stoves that light up using almost any kind of fuel including the 70% alcohol we use as antiseptic.
