down sleeping bags

July 30th, 2009

My sister graduated from Kellogg in the year 2000. She took her MBA there. My entire family decided to fly to Chicago to attend her graduation. While there I visited one of the biggest camping stores in the world. I was so excited because I just got into camping recently. I went to the store to get me a tent, jacket and a sleeping bag. I didn’t know it would be a complicated day for me. Buying the jacket was a breeze. Picking a tent and a sleeping bag was quite painful. I did not realize there were different kinds of tents and sleeping bags. The person attending to me asked if I want down sleeping bags or synthetic; flannel lined, cotton or nylon. He asked if I wanted a one man bag or two man bag; a rectangular shaped, cocoon or tapered.

I thought I was in a foreign country. Who knew sleeping bags would be so complicated. He explained down sleeping bags would be more comfortable as compared to synthetics. He then went into the advantages and disadvantages of each bag. He asked me what season or weather do I usually camp in. I got so confused I ended up buying the jacket only.

foldable grill

July 23rd, 2009

In our family, my mom and I are in charge of cooking whenever we go on picnics. The food in our out of town trips or picnics consists of grilled fish and steak, fried chicken and corn. Just thinking about it makes me look forward to a long weekend.

This is why having a quality foldable grill is very important. It’s very sturdy and easy to pack and bring along whenever we want to. Our foldable grill is a lifesaver. Prior to owning one, we would cook stuff the night before and just bring it to the picnic site. We end up with cold greasy food that doesn’t taste that good. More often than not, we end up buying fried chicken from a fast food chain. Fresh and diverse food is always better.

camping cookware

July 10th, 2009

When my friends invited me to go with them on a camping trip, I got too excited and bought a lot of things that I thought might be needed once we get to the campsite. Little did I know that many of the stuff that I purchased are not considered as camping essentials. Besides, bringing all of them would mean me carrying almost a truckload of items. My friends helped me to choose the most important among the things that I bought.

Some of the things I’ve included in my camping backpack are a portable stove and a camping cookware. Next I got are stainless utensils. After completing my camping essentials, we finally took off and went camping. Going to the campsite was too exhausting; all of us were so tired that we cannot cook anymore. We ended up eating nuts and trail mix.

backpacking tents

July 10th, 2009

My dad is an avid mountain climber. He has scaled several mountains in the rockies and dreams of one day climbing Everest. He is also a rock climber and has joined several wall climbing competitions. His room is filled with camping and climbing gear. He has backpacking tents, climbing ropes, hiking boots and other stuff.

Recently I just learned that dad has been raring to go climbing the whole summer. He has his backpacking tents and camping gear ready. He is now busy finding people to climb with him. I told him that maybe he can make a career out of climbing; he could act as a guide for beginners. I’m betting that he’ll be a great guide. He can turn his passion into a business and make money. Dad said he’d think about it, he was not ready to quit his job as a banker and climb for a living.

screen house

July 9th, 2009

My family and I would go jet skiing in a lake on weekends. I love the outdoors but I hate flies. I especially hate flies on food. That is why it was a necessity to get a screen house where we can put a picnic table inside. That way, we can eat comfortably without the pesky flies bothering us. Of course, once and a while one would get in and land in the food, but at least it wasn’t as bad as it used to be.

Still one pesky fly won’t ruin a perfect weekend of jet skiing. The lake where we jet-ski is know for its tilapia. It has the best tilapia in the world. We would grill it fresh you don’t even have to add anything on it and it would still taste heavenly. Unfortunately, grilling fish would attract lots of flies also. That is why a screen house is a lifesaver.

State park camping sites are always a better choice when camping with children. They have running water and have bathroom and shower facilities. With these amenities, the rough life will not be too hard on the children and they will keep a positive attitude towards camping. Take extra effort to provide comfortable sleeping accommodation. Being able to get enough comfortable sleep will keep them in good spirits when they wake up in the morning.

Tents are fine as it can provide protection from rain and chilly nights. For an even more comfortable place, bring along a portable heater. Enamelware

July 8th, 2009

I know that some people swear by cast iron cooking pots and pans. Yes, they are non-stick when properly seasoned. And yes, they keep temperatures fairly stable. I like cooking in cast iron pots and pans only if somebody else is doing the clean-up. I prefer to cook in cast iron cookware that is coated with porcelain enamel.

It is perfect for cooking foods that need to simmer for a long time like stews and sauces. You can leave them be, with minimal stirring. Enamelware is corrosion resistant and does not absorb flavors. The smooth glassy finish is easy to clean and they come in attractive colors, too. When cooking with enamelware, remember that they are not metal and therefore will not be able to take extreme temperature.
